California Restaurant Closes After Serving Salmonella-Infested Fried Chicken

A California restaurant is shutting its doors after officials linked the establishment to a salmonella outbreak.

The Golden State Fried Chicken and Pizza outlet in downtown Bakersfield closed voluntarily earlier this week after Kern County health officials identified it as the source of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 16 people since mid-January.

Public health investigators believe that most of the victims were infected after eating dishes from the restaurant, which primarily serves fried chicken and pizza.

The closure of the Golden State Fast Food and Pizza comes as a blow to the business, which had been in operation for more than two decades. Bakersfield residents expressed their disappointment at the news on social media.

"That place was my favorite," lamented one woman on Twitter. "I hope they can get things sorted out."

In a statement, health officials said they are working with the business owner to determine the cause of the contamination and ensure that it is eradicated. They advised anyone who may have eaten at the restaurant since January 15th to see a doctor if they develop symptoms of salmonella poisoning, which can include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
