Chick-fil-A is now the country's No. 2 chicken chain after surpassing KFC last year. And while KFC has been revamping its menu and marketing strategy in recent months, it still lags behind both Chick-fil-A and Popeyes in terms of sales.

Chick-fil-A to open its first location in Hawaii

In addition to the Kapolei location, Chick-fil-A said it is also planning to open restaurants in Maui and the Big Island over the next several years.

Hawaii residents have long been asking for Chick-fil-A to come to the islands, with some even starting online petitions calling for the chain to come to their state.

The company made headlines in 2012 when its president Dan Cathy came out against gay marriage, saying he was "guilty as charged" when it came to supporting the traditional family unit. However, Cathy later said he regretted how his comments were received and has since tried to distance himself from politics.
